It was a very informative day at work today. There are several people that have either gone through the gastric bypass surgery or are looking at getting it done this coming year. The last girl that had it done did not work at losing weight prior to her surgical date and advanced her diet to a regular diet sooner than she should have. She has had a lot of abdominal pain and difficulties since her surgery. The people who lost weight prior to surgery and learned good habits are not having any difficulties. When I saw my primary physician this morning he was very impressed and happy with my progress and mentioned that he thought I had learned quite a bit about changing my eating habits, exercise, and my own body responses to food. I agreed with him. This site, my support group, my dietician and the physical therapist have been the best things for me in this learning process. I really never realized how much I didn't know. Journaling has helped a great deal also if for nothing more than venting and airing feelings. I guess it helps to deal with my emotions. I put in an application for a new job at work last night. Right now I work as a quality improvement and education nurse and there is a job opening for a clinical person in the information systems department where I work. A nurse had the job previously. They want someone to do teaching and also someone who is familiar with home care procedures which I am. I like the job I have now, but like the idea of learning something new. If I don't get the job, I won't be broken hearted, but it would be nice to do something a little different for a change.

Good for you! Will hold hopeful thoughts for your job change! I agree we had to be the ones to decide to change our eating and remember to do it every time we put food in our mouth but this is a great site for support and sharing. I agree about the journal - has really helped me a lot too - not only just the venting but writing and recognition of the positive days as well. Helps me balance my emotions. Stellar progress!

Very up beat journaling... love to see that. honest and real. Good for you. The Education factor in my weight loss was the MOST important part. I had no idea how to eat properly and how what i ate impacted me. Funny to me now, but thats the truth. I thought i knew, seems pretty logical but its not. Marketing companies and advertisers all prey on the folks like me who used to beleive if it said "healthy" or "nutri" or anything of the sort. Now Im smarter and know more. Good luck to you on your career path and journey to health!

I've learned a lot on this site as well, I think without it I would have given up at the first plateau. I have to say I still hope you don't go for the surgery but you know your body best and whatever you decide I wish you the best.

Happy New Year! Good for you for taking the steps toward a healthier you. I wanted to tell you my reason for the surgery (two years out - down 87 pounds) because education IS important. For me, though, I had read every book out there, cruised all the web sites, tried it all. I lost, but then gained it all back. I knew what to do and knew my body well, but each failed diet scarred me emotionally. With the surgery, I feel like I can't fail. By the time I eat my healthy protein and a fruit or vegetable, there's no room left for the bad stuff. My biggest pitfall right now is the exercise. I'm not making time for it like I did at first. (That changes TODAY!! :-) As for success after surgery, I'm confidant from your posts that you'll be fine. You seem to have the discipline and desire to do what the surgeon tells you. That is key. I'm a 4th grade teacher. I had my laproscopic surgery the day before our Christmas break. I was back to work at the end of the two week break and none but my closest friends knew I had it until the rapid weightloss was too noticeable to hide. FOLLOW ORDERS TO THE LETTER!!! It's a very, very, bland and boring diet for six to eight weeks, but that's just a blink in the lifetime of a fitter, healthier woman you'll be.
