You only NEED 50 grams of protein a day. Body builders will ingest mega doses of it, usually in highly processed shakes, bars and powders (all of which make them big).

I've been told you can only process 30 g a meal. Any more than that makes for expensive $%*^ LOL

According to a former client of mine who was a Bariatric MD, the rule of thumb if you are trying to lose weight without your body consuming muscle tissue is: your goal weight divided by 2.2. This is the minimum in grams your body needs. If you work out more than twice a week you need to adjust for that. Split protein between your 3 main meals. Every person is different but Son is right stay away from highly processed junk especially bars. Good luck

You want your protein to come from different sources if possible as well. And could be 40g one day, 60g the next. 50 to 55 g is a good baseline. Men that are active go higher.

WHAT I UNDERSTAND ABOUT PROTEIN IS THAT IT BREAKS DOWN MUCH SLOWER THAN CARBS...BECAUSE OF THIS IT IS USED AS NEEDED ..WITH ALL YOUR EXERCISE THIS CN BE A GOOD THING...CARBS BREAK DOWN IMMEDIATELY AND IF U ARE SENDENTARY AFTER YOU EAT IT GOES TO FAT..I ALWAYS DO SOME EXERCISE AFTER EATING....DINNER IS THE HARD ONE FOR ME CUZ AFTER A LONG DAY AT WORK MY FEET KILL ME.

that rule applies to weight in pounds. We measure in kilos and it is one kilo of weight, one gram of protein a day. If you eat too much protein it might be turned into sugar by neoglucogenesis

Love the comments about bodybuilders (not true by the way), but eating protein (lean) with each meal does benefit you. The comments above regarding are TRUE:
Body breaks down average of 30g per meal so don't need more than that per
Body goes after your own muscle if you're not replenishing it with each meal
Stay away from sugar
And my own added comment for you is most clients who are working toward weight loss via food and building muscle can adequately hit 1g-2g per lb of body weight.
Example - I currently weigh 138, at 6 meals a day I get in 145g lean proteins (not from shakes) but from plant sources, small amounts of meats, fish, etc.
thanks for reading!

Okay. Just to throw the cat among the pigeons! I'm NOT a bodybuilder! I'm a brittle diabetic who goes back to hypoglycaemic VERY easily. I had bariatric surgery two years ago. Yes, stomach stapling for those of you who want to judge! So you can judge with moe of the facts: I wasn't fat until genetic diseases and meds after pregnancy helped me get to morbidly obese in less than 6 months and Graves Disease, Chronic Fatigue, and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis have all done a mumber on my metabolism to make yo-yoing with my weight a way of life for over 20 years. So much so that the nutritionists told me I was eating what I should, but I jumped at surgery because I was killing myself. Now! I use protein plant powders in shakes, protein bars AND protein shakes occasionally when I'm out. Ialso eat 5 or 6 times a day as my stomach volume is very small and the small amounts of concentrated food digest well. Larger amounts don't. I just recently was able to add a small amount of exercise back into my life and I pray it will last. But the protein supplements are the only things that actually can keep me fed around my various health conditions. So we all have choices that are what we need to keep us as healthy as we can be. I can't touch most preservatives or additives, and think simple processed food is poison to my body. But if it lets you lose weight?

I exercise hard and consume about .8 grams per pound of body weight. If I didn't I would still consume .7 grams for weight loss. Protein helps to keep you from feeling hungry, and isn't readily converted to fat like simple carbs.
