Today (12/31/2008) I found fatsecret.

I was begining a diet today for two reasons, one i'm about 40 lbs overweight, two my fasting blood sugar level is a bit higher than I wanted to see. I had lost 50 lbs after reaching my all time high of 225 lbs @ 5'8", using the Atkins diet. I've tried again since then but just haven't had the will power to do it.

One big problem for me is I'm a firefighter, and the food at work is really good. As you may have heard, firefighters learn to become pretty good cooks. It's true. We spend 1 out of 3 days of our lives at the firehouse(24 hours shifts), we have to feed ourselves and most of the time the best cook in the house cooks for everyone. We throw $12.00 each into a "kitty", take the fire truck to the grocery store and shop the sales of the day. I can tell you most of the time healthy food is not in the plan. Good, no, great tasting food, but not very often healthy. You can say, "just carry some food in and eat that", but the problem with that is there are 9 firefighters at our firehouse each day and when one "carries", the "meal kitty" just went down by $12.00. That can make the difference between a steak day and a hamburger day for them. So there is some peer pressure there.

Another part of my problem is my wife buys a lot of food high in sugar and carbs. My wife on the other hand doesn't have any weight problems, she is an "exercise addict". She weighs about 130lbs @ 5'7" and is very critical of my weight right now.

I think my biggest problem is not exercising the way I used to. I'd exercise with my wife but spinning doesn't appeal much to me.

Well I'm off and running, I've noticed some of the support dialogue and I like what I have been reading. I'm sure it will help.
