Today I made my first attempt to create EAST AFRICAN CHAPATI!!! Twiga88 has been posting her photos on fatsecret from Tanzania, where she annually spends a month. The humanitarian aid mission she is providing is absolutely wonderful! If you haven't seen her posts, GO SEE THEM! They are amazing! Anyway, frequently her meals include this lovely looking "bread." I asked about it, and she posted a link to the instructions on how to make it. This is what I did! They were really fun, and my family LOVES them! They were very flaky and satisfying! My middle daughter has some very dear friends from Burundi, which borders Tanzania. I am going to try to learn to make them well enough to give these students a "taste of home," since apparently it is traditional Burundian food as well!

Sorry that I am pathetic at getting my pictures in the right order. If you want to see how it is actually done, go to see Twiga88's posts!

Wow!!!! These look delicious. Do you roll them out again after curling them all up? Beautiful job!!

Thanks, Keyten! These had no rising agent, so they need to be super thin to cook properly. The rolled dough is just the way the oil is layered into the dough and then flattened/rolled back out before cooking. I really wish I knew how to number the photos so the steps can be seen clearly, but twiga's has that!

Yes, exactly, adultosaur. They were actually super fun to make and not hard at all. Time consuming, but I can imagine if you were experienced, it would go a lot faster!

Ah, question answered! That’s where the flakiness comes from, like folding butter for pastry dough. Beautiful!

My hubby said they were better than any flour tortilla, naan bread, or flat bread kind of thing he has ever had! Wow! I did add a very little sugar to the dough as Twiga said they do sometimes.

We had them just by themselves as an afternoon snack! But they would be so good with anything! I am really hoping to make them for my girl's Burundian friends. They are international, college students and are some of her dearest friends ever. 😁 ❤️❤️

Wrote down the recipe last night and now I have to make them sometime this week or weekend. Awesome to know that they turn out so good. Great going, Melissatwa

Thanks Ma Ka and binky! Binky, did you see the link to the instructional video? That really helped! It is simple, but seeing it done was really great!

Melissatwa... Congratulations! Hongera sana dada yangu (Congratulations, my sister.... In Swahili). As the kids say in the classrooms here in Tanzania, "you are a super star, keep up, keep it up!"

Twiga, I am honored! "Sister" in any language is a dear, kind thing to call anyone! I wish I could share my little bread with you, and you could tell me how close it is to the real thing! 😁 I will tell my girls' friends what you said! I just found out tonight another of the boys speaks Swahili. I knew one of them did! I don't know how fluent they are since they speak Kirundi, French, and English first.

Outstanding. There isn’t a country or a people in the world that doesn’t have their version of a tortilla.
